The people of the village of Arittapatti in Tamil Nadu are suffering from a drought that has lasted for years; there is hardly anything to eat, the cattle are dying, and the men no longer have any work. So is Ganapathy, a chain smoker and alcoholic. He drags his son Velu out of school in the middle of his lessons to use him as pressure medium against his wife, who has fled his beatings to her parents. Ganapathy is determined to use Velu to force his wife to return and sets off with his son to visit his in-laws. But the wife remains missing. Fearing what is in store for him, Velu tears up the return bus tickets. On the hottest day of the year, Ganapathy and Velu set off on foot for home....
