In a polyandrous village in the Himalayas, pregnant Pema is under pressure when her beloved husband Tashi disappears. Together with her brother-in-law, a monk who is also her de facto husband, she searches for him in the rugged mountain world, uncovering her own self-awareness on her journey.
Pregnant Pema lives with her husbands - three brothers - in a village in the Nepalese Himalayas. When her first husband Tashi disappears on a trading trip to Lhasa and rumours spread that Pema's child is with another man, their young happiness seems to be in danger. Together with her second husband, the monk Karma, Pema embarks on an arduous search for her beloved Tashi. Their journey becomes a spiritual self-discovery and liberation.
‘Shambhala’ is the first Nepalese film ever to screen in competition at the Berlinale. It captivates with the beauty and power of its images. At the same time, Pema is a distinctive, strong and modern female protagonist.
